What is film grain — and why does everyone want it back?
Film grain is the visible texture of analog photography: the microscopic silver-halide crystals that captured the image, each frame's crystals unique. Digital sensors eliminated it — and twenty years later, everyone is paying to put it back.
Grain vs noise: not the same thing
They look superficially similar and couldn't be more different:

This is why "add noise" sliders in editors don't read as film: uniform pixel noise has no clumping, no tonal distribution, no per-frame variation.
Why grain flatters
- It masks. Skin texture, sensor noise, compression artifacts — grain's texture absorbs them all. This is why grainy selfies routinely look better than clean ones from the same front camera. (Front camera tips.)
- It unifies. One grain structure over a whole photo (or a whole photo dump) reads as a single material — the cohesion trick behind the film aesthetic. (Dump strategy.)
- It signals time. Grain is the texture of family albums and archives; the association does emotional work sharpness can't.
How apps recreate it — well or badly
Done badly: a static grain PNG overlaid on every photo (same pattern every shot — the fingerprint of a fake), applied after capture over already-compressed data.
Done well — the way Selfie's film presets do it: grain generated per capture, varying frame to frame, weighted by stock (fine for 35mm SLR presets, heavy for disposable, classic mono clumping for Noir), composited at full capture resolution. Grain applied at capture also survives platform re-encoding gracefully — it absorbs compression rather than fighting it.
