Can the iPhone Camera app use both cameras at once?
Short, honest answer: mostly no.
- Dual photos (front + back in one shot): the built-in Camera app cannot do this on any iPhone, including the newest Pro models.
- Dual video: only iPhone 16 and newer have Apple's Dual Capture video mode, which records the front camera as a small fixed overlay on the back-camera video.
That's the complete list. If you want dual photos, want dual video on an iPhone older than the 16, or want any control over the layout — you need a third-party app.
Why Apple limits it
It isn't a hardware limitation. The multi-camera capture engine (AVCaptureMultiCamSession) has shipped in iOS since 2019 and works on iPhone XS/XR and later — Apple simply exposes it to developers rather than building the full feature into the Camera app. Running two cameras simultaneously costs power and thermal headroom, and Apple keeps the stock camera minimal.

Does dual capture drain the battery? Running two cameras uses more power than one, on any app including Apple's. For normal shooting sessions it's a non-issue; for very long recordings, expect the phone to warm up.
