Dual camera not working on iPhone? The 6 actual causes
When a dual-camera app won't run both cameras, the cause is almost always one of six things — and the first two account for most cases. In order of likelihood:
1. The iPhone doesn't support multi-cam
Simultaneous capture requires the A12 chip or newer: iPhone XS, XS Max, XR (2018) and later. iPhone X, 8 and earlier physically cannot run both cameras at once, on any iOS, with any app. There is no workaround — the image signal processor doesn't support it. (The full support list.)
2. iOS is too old
Multi-cam apps target recent iOS — Selfie requires iOS 17. Settings → General → Software Update. This is the most common fix on supported hardware.
3. Another app is holding the camera
Only one app can own the camera pipeline at a time. If you just used the stock Camera, Instagram, FaceTime or a scanning app, the session can be briefly stuck. Fix: swipe away other camera apps from the app switcher, reopen the dual app. Persistent cases: restart the phone — it clears the capture stack completely.
4. Thermal throttling
Two camera pipelines are heavy; on a hot phone (sun, charging, long video session) iOS sheds load, and multi-cam is early on the list. Symptoms: dual mode works normally most of the time but fails or drops to one camera when the phone is warm. Fix: let it cool a few minutes, unplug while shooting, avoid direct sun on the body.
5. Permissions
Camera (and for video, microphone) permission denied or revoked — common after iOS's periodic privacy resets. Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera / Microphone → enable for the app.
6. Low Power Mode and heavy multitasking
Low Power Mode doesn't block multi-cam outright but tightens the same budgets thermal pressure does; combined with background load it can tip a borderline device. Fix: disable Low Power Mode for the session, close heavyweight background apps.
Still failing?
Delete and reinstall the app (clears a corrupted capture configuration), and confirm the failure reproduces in another multi-cam app — if every dual app fails on an XS-or-newer phone running current iOS after a restart, that points to a hardware camera fault, which the stock Camera's separate front/back modes usually confirm.
